Physician assistant

A physician assistant (PA) is a licensed and certified health care professional who practices medicine in partnership with doctors. Similar to a nurse practitioner (NP),  a PA can also prescribe medications.

Residents and fellows

A resident is a physician who has finished medical school and is receiving training in a specialized area like internal medicine. Board certification requires satisfactory completion of a residency program.

A fellow is a physician who has finished medical school plus residency, and is now receiving more sub-specialty training in infectious diseases.
